Lunch Supervision

All lunchroom students must register for the lunch supervision program. Register through MyCBE or in the School office. More information on our Lunch Supervision page.

We have a high calibre lunch program at Colonel Sanders School which ensures for a safe, pleasant, and positive environment during the lunch break. Our lunch supervisors interact with and monitor all students in a respectful, caring manner.

  • We are fortunate to have enough supervisors so that students can eat at their own desks. Students are directly accountable to lunchroom supervisors during the lunch break.
  • Lunch expectations have been reviewed with your child by their classroom teacher. These expectations are also posted in each classroom.
  • Colonel Sanders strives to be a litter-less lunch school. If possible, pack your child’s lunch in a reusable container – this way there is less waste.
  • Our students have a healthy snack mid-morning, lunch, as well as a snack break mid afternoon. Please pack enough for your child to eat at all of these nutrition breaks.
  • We are very aware of the need of students to eat nutritiously throughout the day. We recognize the need to eat well so they can learn well.
  • Please do not send foods such as candy, sweets and juice which are high in sugar content.

School Council Organizes Healthy Hunger Fun Lunches

Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch is an optional activity students are excited about. Ordering information is provided to parents early in the school year, timelines and dates are provided below. The Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch Coordinator organizes parent volunteers who bring the lunches to the classrooms for those students who parents have ordered. It is a great time to meet other parents and to be in the school during the lunch break. Those students whose families do not order a Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch eat the lunch that has been sent from home.

Order at HealthyHunger.ca. For questions about Fun Lunch, contact our School Council at TLC.colonelsander@gmail.com

Popcorn will be sold at the school, students bring funds to the school to purchase this snack on the day of the event

Lunch will be ordered and paid for online by families through Healthy Hunger

Allergies

Additionally, we have students at our school who are allergic to nuts and related nut products, we strive to be a Nut-Aware School. Parents must indicate any special health concerns on the school registration for their child and are encouraged to ensure classroom teachers are also aware of health issues. For more information about this and other health concerns visit our Illness & Medical page.

Our lunch room supervisors are looking forward to working with you and your child to help with ideas for healthy, nutritious lunches and snacks.

Forgotten Lunch

Sometimes you or your student may forget their lunch. It happens! In the event that your child forgets their lunch, a phone call home will be made so you can make arrangements for a lunch drop off.

Cutlery

Please ensure that your student's lunch contains the fork or spoon that they need to eat their lunch. Students should not be packed with a knife to cut food at lunch time. Please ensure that you have cut your student's lunch for them.

Lunchtime Pick-Up

If you are picking your child up for lunch, please buzz the office to arrange for your child to be signed out, and then again to sign them in upon returning.

  • Monday - Thursday - 12:00-12:45 Lunch and Lunch Recess. Specific schedule to follow (includes recess and three minutes of transition time) .
  • Friday - 11:45-12:15 Lunch (includes a two minute transition time)

Water Bottles

We know the importance of keeping well hydrated and its connections to wellness and learning. Each child should have a labelled personal water bottle each day at school. It should come clean each day and should be taken home each day. Thank you to School Council, we have two water bottle filling stations that students can use to fill their water bottles when needed.

We discourage bringing juice boxes to school. They are sticky, messy and full of sugar, and water is a much better choice!

Home-Packed Lunch Tips for Parents

Lunch is an important part of your child’s day at school. Here are some tips to help you provide a lunch that is safe and nutritious with less waste.

Food Safety

  • Keep cold food cold by using an insulated lunch bag and 1-2 ice packs.
  • Keep hot food hot by using an insulated container. Preheat your container with boiling water before adding hot food. Microwave ovens are not available for elementary students.
  • Pack non-perishables, such as granola bars and whole fruit, that can be kept at room temperature.
  • Most CBE schools are nut-aware, please check with your child’s teacher for more information on nut allergies and other allergies in your child’s classroom.

Help Reduce Waste

  • Bring a reusable water bottle.
  • Pack just enough for a child to eat during lunch.
  • Many schools participate in “boomerang lunches” (pack in/pack out), where all leftover items are returned home.

Tip: Pack a sealable bag or container labeled ‘garbage’ for uneaten food or open containers to avoid mess in the lunch bag.

In 2024, ten CBE schools participated in a waste audit conducted by Green Calgary. Here are a few suggestions from the audit to help minimize waste produced by packed lunches:

  • Send less selections of food. Younger children have difficulty deciding what to eat when there is a lot of choice and sometimes end up not eating.
  • When possible, use reusable containers for foods such as crackers and cut up fruits or vegetables.

Other Tips

  • Make sure your child can open all packages by themselves.
  • Involve your child in packing their lunch. Children involved in food preparation may be more likely to try new foods and eat what is packed, minimizing food waste.
  • Aim to include a food from each food group – lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily (as per Canada’s Food Guide 2019).
  • Some items, such as sandwiches, can be made ahead and frozen to save time. Note that some fillings such as fresh vegetables do not freeze well.
  • Designate a shelf in the fridge/pantry at home for lunch items. This may help make packing lunches quicker and encourage independence for children packing their own lunches.
