Safety

Each year Colonel Sanders Students and Staff participate in a safety drills to practice processes. Students and Staff will practice Lockdown Drills with Calgary Police Services, Fire Drills, learn about the different bells (3 bells means come in, 1 long consistent bell means looks for a supervisor and follow them to another school), learn about bus safety including bus evacuation, playground safety, and pedestrian safety. We thank our parents for supporting and working collaboratively with staff to help create a safe learning environment.

School Access

We are a safe and secure school. All doors remain locked. All visitors and volunteers must enter through the front door at the garden side of the school. During school hours, please use the lower buzzer to contact the office, identify yourself, and then come in when you hear the click. We have a security camera at the front door so we can quickly admit students, guests and visitors. Once you are in the school, please proceed directly to the office.

Our office hours are 8:30 am to 4:15 pm on Monday to Thursday, and 8:30 am to 2:00 pm on Friday, or early dismissal days. The buzzer will not be answered before or after these times.

Supervision & Pick-up

The school does not provide outside supervision before/after school. Please follow the soft entry procedure. We thank all guardians and parents for meeting their students at 3:43 at their exit door so that students do not become anxious and cold as they wait. Any students who are not picked up are brought into the front office so that parents can be called.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
