Learning Garden

The school council needs to raise some money for the Learning Garden.  This is a large space outside our school.  School Council has to pay 100% of the money to take care of the Learning Garden. We are asking each child to bring two dollars to give to their classroom teacher. The money will be used to help keep the garden in a good safe condition so that it can be used and enjoyed by the classes of Colonel Sanders.

Each person who brings a toonie ($2.00) will be entered into a draw to win a small prize. Every class will have a winner!  The draw will take place on October 31.

In Summary
What

Bring $2.00 for the Learning Garden (larger amounts are also welcome and appreciated!)

When

Monday, October 21- Thursday, October 31

Why

To help maintain the Learning Garden and keep it safe for students

Pumpkin Parade

Pumpkin Parade is on Thursday, October 31! On Thursday, October 31, all students may wear a Halloween costume to school. Costumes should be school friendly, avoiding attire that could be scary or frightening to some. Please leave accessories at home, ex: wands, tiaras, wings, etc. There will not be anyone at the school to allow families in to pick up items that have been forgotten.

To maximize the fun School Council invites each child to create a pumpkin-themed art project to bring to school on Thursday, October 31. You can bring a real pumpkin – carved or decorated – or something else you have created - a painting, a drawing, a clay figure or any type of pumpkin-themed art work that you have created! Please create a label for the pumpkin or pumpkin-themed art that is sent to school. The label should include your child's first name and their class code, ex: Leo-4P.

All items must come to the school with your child on October 31 and must be taken home at the end of the day. Any items not picked up will be thrown away.

Pumpkins and art work will be displayed in the hallway during the day and will be toured by each classroom. Pictures and video (artwork with labels, no children) may be taken to post on the Parent Facebook Page.

Thank you!

School Council

Traditional Learning Center

Good Morning Colonel Sanders Families,

You have chosen a Traditional Learning Center (TLC) school, primarily, we have been told, because TLC schools teach character. As a school that emphasizes character, it is important to model character by showing respect and kindness towards our Thorncliffe neighbours. To all our families who show kindness and respect, we thank you for being a role model for your children and our students.

We have noticed that some Colonel Sanders family members are parking in the pedestrian crosswalk, parking close to the stop signs, and parking close to the alley; at times obstructing these locations. We have also noticed some U-Turns on Northmount Drive and Jaywalking across Northmount Drive (with and without students). These actions can cause safety issues for our students and their families as well as our Thorncliffe neighbours. These actions do not show respect and kindness to our community.

Many of us are guests within the Thorncliffe community and it is important that we are viewed by the community as guests who show kindness and respect.

I kindly ask that all Colonel Sanders family members act in good character and treat our neighbours with kindness and respect.

Important Information Regarding Attendance for TLC Students

As per section 7 (I) of the Education Act, it is mandatory for all students between the ages of 6 and 16 to attend school regularly and it is the parent(s)/guardian’s legal responsibility to ensure this happens.

TLC students MUST attend school for the first three days of September. If a student does not attend for the first three days, they will be withdrawn from the TLC program and replaced with someone on the callback list.

For example: If your student attends the first day, then is absent on the second day, they will be withdrawn from the TLC program and replaced with someone who is able to attend on a regular basis.

TLC students MUST attend school for a minimum of 70% of the month of September. If a student attends for less than 70% the student will be withdrawn from the TLC program. At times, depending on the reason for the absences, an Attendance Improvement Plan will be created to increase attendance.

If you are planning on traveling during the school year, a conversation must occur. The conversation needs to be with the Principal and/or the Assistant Principal. An email to the school is not considered a conversation; a conversation is a scheduled in-person meeting, a scheduled Microsoft Teams meeting, or a scheduled telephone conversation.

Please note:  if you are travelling for longer than 1 month at one time, you MUST cancel your transportation fees for that month prior to your departure.  Please email cbetransportationservices@cbe.ab.ca or log into your MyCBE account to cancel your transportation for the months that you are away.

Message from the Office

As a school, our job is to ensure that all 395 students are safe. At the end of the school day there is an important way that you can support this work.

At the end of the day, please do not take students out of any line. Teachers place students onto buses. They account for each student. If a student is removed from the line and the teacher was not informed, we then need to call parents and hold buses until we know the student is safe. This then causes our buses to be delayed. It is best if you write a note in the agenda to inform your teacher that you will be picking up your student. You can also call the school prior to 3:15pm to give this information to the office. The school's phone number is 403-777-6034.

Teachers would love to talk to their families, at the end of the school day when teachers are ensuring student safety by taking students to their buses is not the right time. Students who are being picked up are being supervised by our specialists at the ball wall. All teachers are busy ensuring student safety.

If you would like to talk to your student's teacher, please book an appointment. This could be done by emailing your teacher or writing a note in the agenda.

Lastly, on Friday, our school day ends at 1:15 pm. If you are picking up your students, please arrive promptly for 1:15pm.
