June - A Month to be Proud of Our Accomplishments, Who You Are, and Where You Come From!
The last month of school is a time to reflect in order to move forward with strong intentions.
Students and teachers regularly review work to see how much each student has grown and through conversation students are learning their next steps. In June, when teachers are getting ready to say goodbye to their current students, deep reflection and gratitude occurs within each class, student by student. This may occur through conversations with the class, small groups, as well as individually. The goal is to know how much students have learned and to recognize the next steps.
As a school community we are grateful for the 24 birth origins within our walls (Colonel Sanders School Wall of Flags)! This brings diversity into each and every classroom which leads to many perspectives being shared. Classes learned about various celebrations and dates of significance which included Diwali, Ramadan, Easter, and Eid. These lessons came not only from the adults but also included students teaching other students about their specific acknowledgements and celebrations.
The creation of the 2024-2025 calendar also included dates that recognize and honour the diversity within our community. For example, students learned about National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, Winter Solstice, Black History Month, World Autism Awareness Day, Asian Heritage Month, and Mental Health Week, just to name a few. Acknowledging these dates of significance develops an understanding within people that we are not all the same, we can all learn from one another, and we all hold value.
The Calgary Board of Education has administrative regulations (ARs) that guide our work. AR 6031, Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning and Work Environments (https://www.cbe.ab.ca/GovernancePolicies/AR6031.pdf) outlines how all members of the CBE community contribute to ensuring that all CBE schools are Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning and Work Environments. Members of the CBE community includes: students, staff, and parents.
Colonel Sanders School is a proud TLC that firmly believes that every person deserves to feel welcomed, cared for, respected and safe within the learning and work environment. We believe that we all belong. Who a person is should never affect how they are treated. Each person is made of many different facets; all should be respected. As a TLC we teach students about respect and character. Character is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. This includes how we treat each other at school, on the bus, and within the community.
As we move into the last week of the 2024-25 school year, it is important that we remain focused on maintaining an environment where we all belong, one that is welcoming, caring, respectful and safe.
